ExtraHi,Subscriber Name I’ve benefited from the following thoughts and matter this month, and I think you will too:
Range - Book I haven’t read this book yet, but it’s the book I’m most excited to read in 2020. Ryan Holiday highly recommends it (which says a lot). He wrote that, “David [Epstein] makes a convincing case for the benefits of generalization and experimentation…” As a generalist, that caught my attention.
What will you do to stay weird? - Blog Post I’m a big fan of Tyler Cower. Lately, I’ve been plowing through his podcast series Conversations with Tyler. It’s given me a much broader perspective of the world since he talks to people of diverse disciplines, beliefs, politics, and backgrounds. The article linked above is a taste of Tyler’s unconventional approach. Obit - Documentary I watched a lot of movies this month. They were all pretty good, but Obit stood out in the crowd. It’s a behind the scenes look at the New York Times obituary department. The doc. is full of lovely visuals and stories. The glimpse at the writering processes is especially compelling. Visions - Magazine As a subscriber of Stack, I get a random magazine every month in my mailbox. In December, I received issue 2 of Visions, a literary science-fiction magazine. I don’t read or watch sci-fi, so it was a departure from my norm. As a generalist, though, I was open to something new. Beyond the fascinating content, the magazine is beautifully designed and a joy to hold. It doesn’t hurt that the editor is a designer and typography connoisseur.
